Production date 1300 - 1499
Scope and ContentWith note in hand of Sir Francis, Palgrave on Fly-leaf:
"Roger Bacon: 'De Simplici Medicinâ etc. etc.'
On paper of the 15th Century. Comparatively few of the works of this celebrated writer having been published, all his manuscripts are of great value.
The present, as its name imports, is a Treatise exhibiting the Pharmacopoea of the age, so far as simples are concerned, they being arranged according to the qualities which they were supposed to possess or the ailments which they respectively cure, in a species of tabular form.
It must be remarked, however, that in the colophon, which is coeval with the work, the transcriber attributes it to Bacon, only upon conjecture: "explicit tractatus etc. edites a Fratre Rogero Bacon "utputatur".
A very rare instance of critical caution in manuscripts of the middle ages, & which adds considerably to the value of the present one. F. Palgrave, Dec. 1842."
Note by Joseph Frank Payne on F 1: "This work could not possibly be by Roger Bacon. It may perhaps be by Roger the Salernitan or by Roger de Barone, but I have not identified it. J.F.P."
With bookplate of Thomas Harrison inside front cover
See N.R. Ker. Medieval Manuscripts in British Libraries. Oxford, 1969. p. 204 No. 351
Index References: Medicine Bacon (Roger), 1214 (?)-1294 Roger de Barone Roger, of Salerno Palgrave (Sir Francis), 1788-1861 Payne (Joseph Frank), 1840-1910 Harrison (Thomas), 1771-1824
