Portrait of William Hunter (1718-1783) by Johan Zoffany, c.1770-72. Hunter was a Scottish anatomist, surgeon and midwife who became one of the great teachers and practitioners in London, forming a library and collection of medals and natural history specimens. Hunter is depicted in his role as Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy of Art, lecturing on stage with anatomical and live models, watched by members of the Academy including Sir Joshua Reynolds.
