An inkstand made from a leopard skull and zebra wood, mounted in gold, prepared by Rowland Ward taxidermists from a leopard shot by Sir Joseph Fayrer and presented to the College in 1880. Fayrer was a prominent Anglo-Indian physician who served as a surgeon in the East India Company during the Siege of Lucknow. He later served as President of the India Office Medical Board from 1872, the same year he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Fayrer specialised in tropical diseases, including dysentry, as well as snakebite.
The leopard from which this inkstand was made was shot by him in India in 1879 when he was serving as personal physician to the Prince of Wales on a tour of the country. Upon return, the skull was mounted by famous London-based taxidermists Rowland Ward. Fayrer was an active member of the College Club (a social club of the RCP), who own this object today.
